Siempre Demasiado Tarde

Siempre Demasiado Tarde is the new single by The Dutch, released September 3 on the Bandcamp app. Here’s the story.

It’s no secret that we count Elvis Costello among our inspirations. When we were asked to open for him at Utrecht’s Vredenburg in November 1983, it became one of the highlights of the first half of our musical career, before we began a long hibernation. And Costello continues to inspire us. For example, when he re-released his album This Year’s Model in 2021, in a Spanish version: Spanish Model. A crazy idea, but why not? Hence our new single: Siempre Demasiado Tarde.

The original “I’m Always Too Late,” the opening track of “See I Told You So,” tells the story of a recurring dream. The song has been literally translated into Spanish, except that the outskirts of Istanbul have been replaced by the outskirts of Cadaqués. ¿Por qué? ¡Por eso!

Instead of asking a Spanish-speaking artist to record the lyrics, we, in our extreme arrogance, thought we could do it ourselves. With the help of a Spanish-speaking neighbor. Judge for yourself.
The lyrics are here.

The imaginary ground plan on the cover was drawn by Tijn Croon at 5.

Musically, some things have changed. Spot the seven differences!

By the way, the song defies all the rules dictated by Spotify (“don’t bore us, give us the chorus”), but we don’t give a damn about that, you already knew that since This Is Welfare. Enjoy!
